YALE PHOTO WALK & PHOTO CONTEST

Yale University is the stage for our most popular photo walk. Yale tour guides have been leading Milford Photo groups around campus since 2010!

Photographers of all levels and mediums make frames of the varying surfaces and textures Yale has to offer. Our group moves through Old Campus, a satellite campus/courtyard, past Sterling Memorial Library and finishes the tour at the Hewitt Quadrangle and the iconic Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

For our October 2024 Yale Photo Walk, we added a photo contest! Awards were sponsored by Fujifilm and presented at East Rock Brewing Company . Participants and community members were invited to attend.

Ditch the Autofocus

At macro distances, even the best AI-autofocus systems can "hunt" and miss by a millimeter. Switch to manual focus. Tip: Set your focus ring to the desired magnification and physically move the camera back and forth until the subject snaps into clarity.

It’s tempting to stop down to f/22 to get everything in focus. Don’t. A phenomenon called diffraction kicks in at tiny apertures, actually making your image softer. Most macro lenses hit their "sweet spot" of sharpness between f/8 and f/11.

Master Focus Stacking

Since the depth of field at 1:1 is paper-thin, you often can't get the whole subject sharp in one shot. Take a series of photos, shifting the focus slightly for each. Modern cameras (like the Sony α7 V or OM-1 series) have built-in Focus Bracketing. You can then merge these in post-processing for a final image with impossible depth.

The Background is Half the Battle

A distracting leaf or a bright twig in the background can ruin a shot. Use a small piece of colored cardstock or a "plamp" (plant clamp) to tidy up the scene. A clean, out-of-focus background makes your subject truly pop.

Macro photography reminds us that there is beauty in the mundane. The next time you see a ballpoint pen or a common housefly, look closer—you might just find your next gallery-worthy shot.

Snow acts as a giant natural reflector, but it also confuses your camera’s internal computer. Here is how to handle the light.

Landscape & Minimalism

Snow simplifies the world. Find clean lines and textures that are usually hidden by brush or dirt.

Pro Tip : Your camera's light meter wants to turn white snow into gray. To keep the drifts looking crisp and bright, overexpose by 1–2 stops.

Macro: The Micro-Winter

Don't just look at the forest; look at the frost. Individual snowflakes and ice crystals offer incredible geometric beauty.

The Gear : If a dedicated macro lens isn't in your bag, use extension tubes to decrease your minimum focus distance.

The Precision : Use a NiSi focusing rail for the micro-adjustments required to nail focus on delicate textures.

Don't forget the interior . The inside of a car can tell just as compelling a story as the outside. Capture interior shots to add dimension and perspective.

Transform a scene using long exposure . Capture the blur of moving people and vehicles while rendering a motionless subject in sharp detail. A sturdy tripod is necessary to keep your camera perfectly still and a neutral density filter acts like sunglasses for your camera, reducing the amount of light that hits the sensor. This allows you to use a much slower shutter speed even in bright conditions.

Introduce vibrant colors and dynamic effects . Portable, battery-powered ProMaster Chroma Tube Lights offer a full spectrum of color and brightness control, allowing photographers to paint light onto the car's body, rims, or interior. By "light painting" with a tube light during a long exposure, you can create streaks of color, highlight specific lines of the vehicle, or project a soft, colorful glow to change the mood of the shot.

Use a circular polarizer filter for daytime shots . Circular polarizer filters remove glare and reflections from water, glass, and other non-metallic surfaces; colors appear more saturated with better contrast. CPLs help you capture clear, sharp images without affecting color balance.

Film is a particular thing. It’s something that demands certain conditions be met for the images to come out well. Digital has a cushion when it comes to that; you can figure out the proper conditions by taking pictures, seeing what needs to be changed, and tweaking setting until the conditions are met. There’s less leeway when using film in comparison. Add onto that a flash and now the margin between perfect exposure and abysmal exposure is fine. Keeping the flash’s settings is a game of dependents. The strength of the flash is determined by the ASA (film speed), which is then made manageable by the aperture and distance from the subject. Get too close or have your aperture open too much and the image is overexposed. Vice versa and it’s underexposed. Curtain shutter cameras like the Nikon F2 (which was the camera I used) can only go 1/60th of a second with the flash, as any faster speeds would open and close before the flash properly lights the subject. I like using low ASA film when using the flash because you can exploit the stock’s low grain and high resolution while it’s dark for sharp images.

Less is more when it comes to automotive still life photography. Concentrating on details and incorporating some complimentary surroundings can emphasize the essence of the machine; the more exotic the car the more opportunities you have to make some esoteric frames of unique shapes and textures. While static displays can seem limiting, consider that professional display lighting will build in the drama. Don't be afraid to shoot tight with a telephoto or macro lens to highlight sporty vignettes and minimize clutter.

1997 Ferrari F310 V10 F1 These two images were made with a cell phone and illustrate the challenge and opportunity of window light. The first frame was made a couple of weeks before we went back and made the second. The first frame is backlit as I shot into the windows and the color and detail is muted; the second frame was a sunny day where the light just danced across the flaming Ferrari red and I had the person who took our picture stand with her back against the windows. Try to keep the windows out of your frame whenever possible and shoot with them at your back. iPhone 16

Lighting Up the Night: Your Guide to Photographing Fireworks Like a Pro

Fireworks displays are a feast for the eyes, but capturing their explosive beauty with your camera can be a challenge. Forget blurry streaks and overexposed bursts – with a few key techniques and the right gear, you can create stunning images that truly do justice to the spectacle.

Ensure you're ready to capture those dazzling moments:

The Indispensable Tripod: Stability is Key

For fireworks photography, you'll be using multi-second exposures. A tripod will keep your camera perfectly still, allowing those brilliant light trails to paint across your sensor without unwanted blur.

Pro Tip : Practice setting up your tripod beforehand, especially in low light. You don't want to be fumbling when the show starts! Your phone's flashlight can be a lifesaver when making adjustments to your camera settings.

Take Control with Manual Exposure

Your camera's automatic metering system simply won't be able to keep up with the extreme and sudden changes in light during a fireworks display. This is where manual exposure comes in. By setting your shutter, aperture, and ISO yourself, you'll have complete control over how the fireworks are rendered.

General Starting Settings (but be prepared to adjust!):

ISO : Keep it low, typically between 100-400. Fireworks are bright, and a low ISO will minimize digital noise and retain vibrant colors.
Shutter Speed : Aim for around +/- 5 seconds. This will allow you to capture the full arc and burst of the fireworks, creating those beautiful light trails.
Aperture : Start in the range of F11-22. A smaller aperture (higher f-number) will ensure more of the scene is in focus and prevent overexposure of the bright explosions.

Master Your Focus: Manual is the Way to Go

Autofocus systems can struggle in the dark, often "hunting" for a subject when confronted with intermittent bursts of light. To ensure sharp fireworks, switch your lens to manual focus. Before the show begins, identify a distant light source or object (like a building or a far-off tree) and manually focus on that. Once you've achieved sharp focus, leave your lens in manual mode and don't touch the focus ring.

White Balance: Keep it Simple

For color balance, you can generally leave your camera on Auto White Balance or set it to Daylight. Fireworks naturally produce vibrant colors, and either of these settings should render them accurately. You can always fine-tune the colors in post-processing if needed.

Lens Selection: The Sweet Spot for Fireworks

When it comes to lenses, think about the scale of the display. A medium telephoto lens (40mm-80mm) will offer a comfortable and versatile focal range. This allows you to capture the full burst without being too wide or too zoomed in. Super wide-angle lenses might make the fireworks appear small in the frame, while longer telephotos might be too restrictive for capturing the entire display.

About ProMaster Desktop Broadcast Stand

Video conferencing and live streaming from home has become commonplace yet looking your best while doing so requires more than just a computer. The ProMaster Desktop Broadcast Stand supports smartphones, tablets, lights, and microphones that are now standard components of the modern office. It clamps to the edge of a desk and can support two accessories. Its adjustable height allows users to position their accessories around a computer effortlessly.

There are two main parts to the Desktop Broadcast Stand: an Upright and an Extension Arm.

The Upright clamps to a desk, table, countertop, workbench, or surface up to 2” thick with at least a 2” overhang. Its height adjusts with twist locks and ranges from 17 5/8” to 41 ¾”. A ball head at the top of the Upright is available for mounting and positioning a camera or accessory. Removing the ball head reveals a ¼”-20 threaded post.

The Extension Arm clamps to the Upright at any height. Its ball head is used to position another accessory and is permanently attached.

The Upright has a max load of 3 lbs., while the Extension Arm has a max load of 1.5 lbs. Both load limits are etched into the components as a convenient reminder.

Introducing the NEW Canon EOS R5 Mark II Mirrorless Camera

Overview:

The EOS R5 Mark II is a worthy successor to the incredibly versatile EOS R5 bringing a host of new features that make this the most powerful EOS 5 series camera ever. It starts with a brand-new 45MP sensor that is back illuminated and stacked for blazingly fast read-out speeds that allow for a 30 fps electronic shutter, then builds on that with major focus improvements, increased video capabilities, and so much more.

DIGIC Accelerator

The DIGIC Accelerator chip is a completely new front-end processor developed by Canon to supplement the power of the proven DIGIC X processor. The DIGIC Accelerator handles the processing that makes so many of the new features of this camera possible, allowing the DIGIC X chip to focus solely on image processing, again contributing to incredible speed. The DIGIC Accelerator processes large volumes of data directly from the image sensor for actions like AF detection to exposure metering calculations that enable eye-control focus, subject identification and tracking, and even deep learning with features like neural upscaling and noise reduction.

Totally new Sensor

Even though the pixel count is the same as the EOS R5, this is a completely new 45MP sensor design. This new full-frame sensor is stacked and back-illuminated allowing for incredible electronic shutter performance of 30 fps RAW or full-resolution JPEG still images. Sensor read-out speeds are dramatically increased, significantly reducing rolling shutter distortion. Pre-continuous shooting is now possible in electronic shutter mode, when the shutter is pressed halfway the camera begins capturing images, and when fully pressed, the previous ½-second of images are written to the memory card.

Time to focus

Autofocus has been significantly updated on the EOS R5 Mark II with features like subject tracking which it shares with the new flagship EOS R1. Subject tracking allows you to maintain focus on a subject even when they are obscured briefly while shooting. And, for even faster positioning of your active AF Area, the R5 Mark II adds Canon’s Eye Control AF - even more advanced than the Eye Control in the EOS R3 camera. Once you calibrate the viewfinder to your eye, just look where you want to focus, and the AF Area will move there when you press the AF activation button.

Action priority

Thanks again to the increased camera processing power of the DIGIC Accelerator chip, we have developed a new AF mode called Action priority. This new focusing technology selects subjects according to movement and other factors so you always get a great action shot! This feature works with three sports at the moment, soccer, volleyball, and basketball. With Action priority the camera can recognize and track specific people, and takes into account ball tracking, movement tracking, eye-control AF and more to help ensure you get the action shot you want when everything is moving so fast.

Get Cinematic

With its 45MP sensor, 8K video up to 60 frames per second can be recorded internally, to the camera’s CFexpress card (sold separately). A new menu now includes Cinema EOS terminology, making it even easier for users to access and understand the video features of this camera, and be easily integrated into video productions where Cinema EOS cameras may be used like the EOS C70 or EOS C400.

RAW video can be recorded at 8K resolution, and there’s now an S-RAW setting for 4K RAW video recording. RAW video is now 14-bit recording, for even greater range of tonalities. For users who don’t need RAW video, MP4-type video can be recorded in a multitude of possible file types and resolutions, from Full HD (at up to 240 frames per second), 4K at up to 120 frames per second with sound and 8K. Any of the “Fine” options record oversampled video, for even greater sharpness and detail. Canon Log 2 and C-Log 3 are available. And, the R5 Mark II adds features like a full-size HDMI port on the camera, Waveform monitors, and up to 24-bit, 4-channel audio recording.

More power

With all of the enhancements to the new EOS R5 Mark II, it requires a little more power than the previous EOS Mirrorless cameras, and therefore ships with a new, higher amperage battery, the LP-E6P. This battery is the same size and shape of previous LP batteries, but is easily distinguished from older models by featuring a white stripe and white Canon logo. This new battery can be used in older Canon mirrorless and even DSLR cameras, but will require a camera firmware update to do so.

* Canon LP-E6N and LP-E6NH battery packs can be used in the R5 Mark II camera, but with some significant limitations - - especially Wi-Fi connection, and for video recording. Also, continuous Drive speeds with mechanical or first-curtain electronic shutter will be reduced. This applies to any battery in any of the optional battery grips as well.

Bright and clear EVF

A new Electronic viewfinder is now the same 0.5-inch 5.76 million dot OLED EVF you would find in the EOS R3 with approx. 100% coverage, 0.76x magnification, and an eyepoint of approx. 24mm. Some of the EVF lenses inside the body are sealed in an airtight structure making it difficult for the viewfinder to fog up.

Weather resistance

The EOS R5 Mark II is dust- and weather-resistant, with the same performance as the EOS R5, even when using one of the new optional grips.

Dual Card Slots for CFexpress and UHS-II SD Memory Cards*

Whether you are shooting photos every day, or are recording 8K videos, the EOS R5 Mark II camera can capture an incredible amount of images through its super high-speed CFexpress dual card slots. Plus a UHS-II SD*** card slot is also provided at your disposal. The two card slots can be utilized for separate recording of still photos and movies, main and proxy recording of movies, and recording to multiple cards.

** Type B compatible. With firmware v.2.0.0 and above, camera can accept CFexpress cards over 2TB in capacity. With these cards, the camera can write to the first 2TB (only) of total card capacity.

*** Some types of data cannot be saved on the SD memory card.

Improved Image Stabilization

The EOS R5 Mark II has the same 5-axis in-body stabilization as the original R5 that provides optimal image stabilization, and uses coordinated IS in conjunction with RF lenses that have built-in IS. Roll operation range is now approx. 2xthat of the EOS R3, and when a compatible lens is used*3, the CMOS sensor suppresses blurring at the periphery of the image, and even at the center. Additionally, the IS algorithm has been updated and a new mechanical design now allows for 8.5 stops of coordinated correction at the center, and 7.5 stops at the periphery*1*2*3

Overview

The Canon EOS R1 is our top-of-the-line full-frame professional camera that is a powerhouse for professionals working in fast action situations, carrying on the legacy of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III digital SLR camera. The 1-series has a long tradition of providing excellent AF performance, speed, durability and reliability, all areas the EOS R1 excels in, but there is so much more including new faster processing, state-of-the-art video features, and networking options that really make this 1-series camera the ONE everyone has been waiting for.

Sensor design

The sensor design on this camara is all new, and all Canon. this new 24.2MP back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor is the heart of the EOS R1. Balancing the needs of speed and quality, this sensor provides enough pixels for a two-page magazine spread (without enlargement of the file), while also providing incredibly fast sensor read-out speeds, and enhancing low-light performance. The sensor read-out is so fast that it has virtually eliminated Electronic shutter rolling shutter distortion issues. Thanks to this new sensor, and the addition of the new DIGIC Accelerator front-engine processor, the R1 is capable of capturing up to 40 fps of RAW, JPEG, or HEIF (HDR-PQ) images using Electronic Shutter. The DIGIC Accelerator chip also has a useful In-camera Upscaling feature that uses deep learning to double the horizontal and vertical size of a JPEG on your card (leaving the original image alone) in about 10 seconds. That means you can upscale a 24MP image to 96MP right in the camera. The EOS R1 maintains a full Mechanical shutter, and First Curtain Electronic shutter, both capable of continuous shooting at up to 12 fps. Additionally, all continuous shooting speeds with electronic shutter can be user-customized to meet your continuous shooting needs.

Action priority

Thanks again to the increased camera processing power of the DIGIC Accelerator chip, we have developed a new AF mode called Action priority. This new focusing technology recognizes specific subject movements in selected sports, and automatically moves AF points to a player performing that motion — taking a shot, passing a ball, and so on. According to movement and other factors, it simplifies finding and keeping an active AF Area upon a subject about to perform a critical action, and it can really help getting great sports pictures! This feature works with three sports at the moment, soccer, volleyball, and basketball. With Action priority the camera can recognize and track specific people, and takes into account ball tracking, movement evaluation, and even multiple subjects in a scene at the same time, to help ensure you get the action shot you want when everything is moving so fast in front of your eyes. This Action Priority mode takes on even more power when you pair it with pre-continuous shooting. When enabled, pressing the shutter button halfway will start the pre-recording process, when you fully depress the shutter, the previous 1/2 -second of images will be written to the memory card (so up to 20 if the R1 is shooting at 40 fps), and will continue capturing images until you release the shutter button.

Our best EVF

The new Electronic viewfinder is now Canon’s best ever, featuring a 9.44 million dot resolution in an OLED display, a 0.9x magnification for a large view, and its maximum brightness is the highest yet in an EOS R-Series camera. Additionally, some of the EVF optics inside the body are sealed in an airtight structure, making it less likely that the viewfinder will fog up.

If you are coming from a DSLR , using this EVF will feel very natural to you, but you will have access to much more information than you ever could have had in a DSLR. And, low-light viewing is a big improvement over previous optical viewfinders, as well.

Reliability

Like every 1-series camera before it, the EOS R1 features robust dust- and weather-resistance and the camera also features a magnesium alloy exterior body. Reliability means more than just weather resistance at Canon, every component of the R1 is put through more rigorous testing than any of our other models — from button presses, to dial turns, this camera is ready for real life photo and video capture and all of what that entails.

Dual Card Slots for CFexpress** Type B

Dual slots for CFexpress cards give you the speed and storage you need for demanding projects. This also allows for cool abilities, like the ability to record smaller-sized proxy movies to slot 2 while simultaneously capturing high-res footage on the main card in slot 1. Using the Dual Shooting (still & movie) setting, the dual slots also allow you to capture 17MP JPEG still images to slot 2, while recording 30 fps Full HD video on the main card with no interruption to the video.

Video where you need it

The Two Broad Categories: Natural vs. Artificial

Photographers primarily work with two types of light:

Natural Light : This refers to any light source that exists without human intervention. Sunlight, moonlight, and even the soft glow of fireflies can all be considered natural light.
Artificial Light : This encompasses any light source created or controlled by humans. Studio strobes, speedlights, continuous lights, and even the humble desk lamp all fall under this category.

Natural Light: A Free, Fickle Friend

Anastasia Talks Pet Photography...

When I shoot studio portraits of pets - I like to use at least 1 strobe. I prefer the Godox AD400 as a main light, and the Godox AD300 as a fill light, when using 2 strobes. Alternatively, if space is limited, I will use just the 1 Godox AD400 diffused in combination with a reflector . A reflector is especially useful when the pet has deep or dark eyes - getting that extra bit of light back in makes all the difference!

I love seamless paper backgrounds as they’re easy to cut & keep a clean slate. I often put a blanket down if the pet is uncomfortable with the texture of the paper.

My go-to camera set up has been the Sony A7 IV with the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II . I find the 24-70 is a versatile range that makes it easy to get different shots without having to move around much in the space.

My top tips for shooting pets:

Have Your Pet's Favorite Treat or Toy Ready

Having your pet's favorite food/treat or toy handy helps to get their attention and motivate them. I sometimes put the toys right on top of my lens as this gets them to look right at the camera!

Minimize Distractions

The fewer distractions, the better. Having as few people involved as possible & securing a small area, whether inside or outdoors, helps negate the possibility of an escaped or distracted pet.

Use a Reflector

A reflector is a great tool to have handy as certain animals have deep eye sockets or dark eye color - controlling the direction of light with the reflector helps to put the “catch light” back in their eyes and bring them to life!

Incorporate Props

Using baskets, flowers, blankets, and fun accessories can make for a fuller photo shoot.

Make Sure Your Pet's Whole Face is in Focus

It is important to shoot at an aperture of at least f/5.6 - because for most pets their eyes and nose are not on the same plane of field, a shallow depth of field will only allow for focus on one or the other. However, stopping down will help to ensure the entire face is tack sharp.

Use a Fast Shutter Speed

Most animals don’t sit still, so you’ll want to freeze motion as much as possible.

Set a Custom White Balance

A grey card or digital exposure card is a great tool for setting your white balance correctly.

Protect Your Lens

A good protection filter will protect your lens from a curious nose sniffing too close to the lens! I have had a dog lick my lens before, so a good filter definitely keeps things clean.

Get the Gear

While a fancy camera can definitely help, you don't necessarily need top-of-the-line equipment to take great pet photos. Here's what you can use to capture your pet's purrfectness:

To say she has lived an interesting life is an understatement. Dancer on Broadway and television; swimming and diving instructor; lifeguard; ski and yoga instructor; adopted by three Native American tribes; anointed medicine woman and ordained minister; provider of pastoral care for terminally ill children and their families; practitioner of Native American bodywork until age 83; nature guide; avid kayaker... The list goes on and on.

After years apart, I was fortunate to spend some time with her last Christmas in her small apartment in Atlanta, Georgia. We sat and talked about life, old times, and photography. My grandmother has always supported my creative endeavors, whether they be music, literary, or art related. For years, she kept every piece of artwork or writing I shared with her. When she turned 80, I began making her an annual calendar of my photo adventures. Fast forward nearly fifteen years, and that tradition is still going strong.

During this particular visit with my grandmother, it dawned on me that I had no current pictures of her, and certainly none I had taken. While we talked, she let me capture a few candid shots. I focused on her hands. Hands express so much about a person, as much as any facial expressions can. They convey a history of a lifetime.

Sadly, this would be the first and last photo I took of her. She passed away peacefully this past summer at the age of 94. A life well lived, and a photo I will now treasure forever..."

Why do you need a neutral density (ND) filter?

TO CAPTURE SMOOTH MOTION

When shooting moving subjects, such as water or waterfalls, you can use a slow shutter speed to create a sense of blur and movement. In bright light, this can lead to overexposure. An ND filter allows you to use a slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. This is especially useful for landscape photography, where you want to capture the smooth movement of water or clouds.

TO CREATE A SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD IN BRIGHT LIGHT

If you want to blur the background of your photo, you need to use a wide aperture. In bright light, this can lead to overexposure. An ND filter allows you to use a wider aperture without overexposing your image. This is a good feature for portrait photography, where you want to focus attention on your subject by blurring the background.

ND filters are available in a variety of strengths, from 2 stops to 10 stops or more. The strength of the filter will determine how much light is reduced. A 2-stop filter will reduce the amount of light entering the camera by two stops, a 3-stop filter will reduce the amount of light by three stops, and so on. ProMaster HGX Prime Variable Neutral Density filters provide 1.3 to 8 stops of light control.

You Need a Superzoom Lens | Tony & Chelsea

Tony & Chelsea Review and Demonstrate Superzoom Lenses

Superzoom lenses have a massive focal length from wide-angle to super-telephoto. They let you keep ONE LENS on your camera for almost anything - never have to stop and dig through your bag to change lenses. In fact, leave your backpack at home, because with a superzoom lens you need only your camera, one lens, and a strap on your shoulder.

Tony & Chelsea Northrup review and demonstrate superzoom lenses, using the Tamron 18-300mm (for Sony or Fujifilm) and the Tamron 28-200mm (for Sony). They'll talk about the benefits compared to your kit lens or your smartphone (specifically sharp details on faraway subjects such as wildlife), as well as how to get the best portraits, landscape and travel photos.

Chelsea : I'm shooting wide angle at 18mm. What are you doing?

Tony : I'm changing my lens.

Chelsea : I'm at 300mm to get the details. What are you at?

Tony : I'm looking for my lens.

Chelsea : I can get the entire thing in the frame at 18mm. What do you got?

Tony : I'm looking for my lens cap.

Chelsea : If you are always looking for your lens, you're probably going to want to superzoom; you can do it all with one lens.

Tony : Okay, real world stuff here: I am a huge pixel peeper. I love super sharp prime lenses, but when we're on vacation together, it is so annoying when I have to stop and change lenses. And I've only recently begun to appreciate the superzoom category of lenses. These are lenses that go from, like, wide angle to super telephoto; they are the one lens you can keep on your camera all the time.

Chelsea : They're what your kit lens wants to be, but just cannot measure up to.

Tony : Most people, when they buy a camera, they just want one lens. And most people want something that'll take better pictures than their smartphone, but guess what? The kit lens that you got probably isn't much better at all, and it certainly doesn't do super telephoto well for things like sports, wildlife, or just isolating little details in nature.

Chelsea : What are these lenses, Tony?

Tony : I have the Tamron 28-200mm for full frame Sony —and you have...

Chelsea : ...the 18-300mm for APS-C sensor Sony and Fujifilm . What we're talking about is a genre of lenses called superzooms that go from wide angle to very telephoto. We're going to tell you why they're versatile and what instances you'll want them, and show you side-by-sides with your kit lens—which is probably not up to snuff for everything you want to take pictures of—and also our iPhone so you can see how much better the image quality is when you're using a specific lens like this.

Tony : Let's take a walk and take some pictures.

Chelsea : Okay. I'm not going to pixel peep with these lenses because that's not the point; it's not about being the sharpest lens, it's about being extremely versatile. I have 28-200mm here. That means I can go wide angle for landscapes, or zoom in and get more details, or do a more compressed portrait shot. So I'm going to go wide angle, I'm going to zoom in, and you can see the versatility of this lens in a scenario like this. You can see I was able to capture the expansive beauty of this landscape, but also there's this really cute red hut on the horizon, and at 200mm, I was able to zoom in, isolate it, and get a nice shot of that as well. Now you can see how these pictures compare to just the kit lens that comes with your camera—it's much better. And I'll also use what a lot of people are using: an iPhone. This is the newest one, the 14 Pro, so they'll be especially sharp, and let's see how it compares. This situation reminds me of so many times when I've been traveling and I come upon something I didn't expect I would want to take pictures of. Would this get as sharp a shot as a prime that I planned on taking? No. But also, I'd be able to at least get a photo that was good quality. The best? No. But I'd get the shot, and that's better than nothing at all.

Tony : So those are the strengths, but there are some limitations too. The first: they're not as wide on the wide end as your smartphone would be—like, my iPhone goes to, I think, 13mm—but that's an easy workaround if you can shoot a panorama. And I'll show you how: if I'm taking a horizontal picture, I'll just switch and take a vertical picture, and then I'll take picture, picture, picture, picture, overlapping by about one-third until I capture the entire scene. Then I can import them into Lightroom and, with a couple of clicks, combine them back into a single super wide angle, high megapixel picture for way better results than I could get with my smartphone. The other limitation is shooting in low light and dark environments. These are not fast lenses; they don't have a big wide aperture like you would get out of an f/1.4 prime, and that means that in low light, they're going to be noisier. But if you know the rule of doubles, then you'll take a lot of shots in continuous shooting mode with longer and longer shutter speeds until you get the best possible handheld results. And because all these superzooms are stabilized, you can really handhold for a long time. Superzooms can also be amazing for portraits. Now, my day-to-day portrait lens is a very expensive, like, 85mm f/1.2 or 50mm f/1.2. That low f-stop number, f/1.2, indicates it opens up really wide to let in lots of light and really blur the background. You can't do that with a kit lens, but you actually can do it with a superzoom. Here's what you do: you zoom in all the way, and because they have a lot of reach, that will let you blur the background even though you have an f-stop number of, like, f/5.6 or f/6.3. I'll show you.

Tony (voiceover): Even at a glance, the difference is obvious. The kit lens is only moderate telephoto, so it doesn't compress the facial features, just making them smaller and generally more attractive, but it also doesn't cast the background out of focus. Look at the background blur we get from that superzoom; even though this one's f/5.6, you can see it just completely blurs the kind of ugly location that we were in. Okay, but could a superzoom possibly be sharp at 200mm? Let's zoom in. Yeah, at 200mm the Tamron is so sharp, it's crazy. You can see every little eyelash, and that detail's just all lost on the kit lens. Tamron's APS-C 18-300mm blurs the background even more—look, it's just a complete wash. And if we zoom in, it's not quite as sharp as the 200mm full frame Tamron. Now, it zooms further—this is more than twice as far as the full frame 200mm lens—and like all superzooms, you're trading sharpness for versatility. So while it's more versatile, it's not quite as sharp. But still, especially for images that are destined for social media like Instagram, you would never notice the sharpness difference, but you would notice the extra compression of the facial features and that crazy bokeh.

Tony : Compared to a kit lens, it looks so much better. Okay, your smartphone can do some bokeh, but it's fake and looks a little ugly. And also, your smartphone can't trigger these lights. Big win for the superzooms.

Chelsea : If you're looking for a lens that can take pictures of your kids' sports, a superzoom is perfect for that. We're here at a kids' baseball field and Tony is somewhere over there on home plate; I'm near the bleachers. So I want to show you what a superzoom can do when you're taking pictures of your athlete versus the kit lens. So, first I'll do the superzoom. We have 300mm here, and let's see how close we can get.

Tony (voiceover): Look, here's the view you get of the batter with your kit lens or your smartphone, and this is the view you get with the superzoom—the 18-300mm in this case. But to be fair, you could crop with your kit lens, so let's crop them to the same view. So when your kid hits the home run, which of these two image qualities do you want? The superzoom here is just far better.

Chelsea : Another thing to consider that's nice about the superzoom is that if you need to zoom in far to get those close-up pictures of sports, you can do it. But if you're going to a pizza place after the game and you want to get wide-angle portraits, or you're in a close-quarters place and you still want pictures, you can zoom right back to 18mm and get those photos too without changing out your lens.

Tony : So we've sold you on the idea of a superzoom, but which one should you get? Today we have two Tamron lenses. This is the Tamron 18-300mm VC —for vibration control—and it's available for Fujifilm and Sony mounts, the Sony APS-C cameras. This is the Tamron 28-200mm , also with vibration control, and it is only for Sony E-mount. So if you have Sony or Fujifilm, I would pick up one of these. They both cost about $700. But if you'd rather get a name brand lens, that's an option too. Those name brand superzooms are available; they just cost you a little more. And if you have a different camera brand— Canon , Nikon , Olympus ( OM System ), whatever—there's certainly a superzoom available for it, and the people at Milford Photo can help you find it and make sure that you get the best one. Chelsea : I also think it's good for people who don't necessarily want to buy a lot of gear but shoot a lot of different things. You're taking portraits of your kids, or you're doing sports games, you're taking pictures of some wildlife in your backyard—you can do a little bit of everything without having to buy a bunch of lenses.

Tony : The first four here—the Canon R10, R7, R6, and R5 —are general-purpose cameras that can do anything, including wildlife and sports. These two cameras— the RP and the R —they're better values with better image quality for people who are shooting landscapes, travel, and portraits. And finally, this big bad boy: the Canon R3 . This camera is meant for serious professionals, especially pro sports shooters. Now we're going to show you each and every one and help you pick the perfect one that gives you the most bang for your buck.

Tony : I way prefer shopping at a small business like that than one of the big-box businesses, but they're also great because they will answer your questions; and if you want something less than $1,000, they can help you find that. Now, let's pack up all this gear and take them out of the field so we can tell people which camera they should buy.

Chelsea : These are Canon's two newest R cameras, and it's the R10 and the R7 . Now, the R10 is a $1,000 and the R7 is $1,500. What are you getting for that extra $500? Let's go over some specs here. With the new R10 , for $1,000, you're getting 23MP, 15 frames per second with the mechanical shutter, 23 frames per second with the electronic shutter, and you get 4K 60 video cropped. How does that compare to the extra $500 that you're going to pay for this R7? Well, I think you get some pretty good features for this: you have 32MP, so you have some extra resolution if you're using good enough glass to see the difference.

Tony (voiceover): Just to prove that difference in megapixels doesn't mean anything, here's the same picture taken with the R10 and R7 . Even zoomed in 1,300%, I cannot see any difference.

Chelsea : You have 15 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and 30 frames per second with the electronic shutter. Now, for this scenario, I want to point out: if you're shooting wildlife, sports, or any action with the electronic shutter, you are going to encounter something called "rolling shutter," like you can see in this picture here. So your photo might be ruined anyways if you use the e-shutter. When using these two cameras for sports, I'm gonna say they both have the same frame rate because it's both 15 frames per second with the mechanical shutter, but the R7 does have a larger buffer; and that means that you can take about twice as many photos before your buffer fills up. Let's wait till the hurricane goes away.

Chelsea : There are still some perks at the R7 that has—it—I think are super useful, one being a stabilized sensor. That means you're not going to get as much camera shake. If your lens is not stabilized, you have the stabilized sensor to make up for that. For video, you have 4K 60 uncropped, and you also have two SD card slots so you know that if one card gets corrupted, you have the backup there. So that's a good perk.

Chelsea : The options for your kit lenses is an 18-45mm and an 18-150mm. If you're going to be shooting sports, you absolutely want the one that's going to zoom more because you're going to be standing back on the sidelines; you won't be able to get close, and you're going to need this extra reach.

Chelsea : To show you the difference between these two lenses, I'll have Tony take a few pictures of me at home plate so you could see what you'd get at a kids' baseball game.

Tony (voiceover): The 18-45mm is okay for general shooting, but this is as close as I could get for sports. The 18-150mm, on the other hand, almost fills the frame here. Let's crop them both to the same perspective so we can see the difference in sharpness. Another big advantage of the 18-150mm: when shooting at the wide end, which you'll do a lot, it's about two-thirds of a stop faster. You can see how much more light it gathers; this will drastically improve your low-light photography.

Tony : I'm here in the dugout, where I've always sat as an athlete, and I want to show you the difference between the sensors on the $2,000 and up cameras, like the R6 and the R5 and the R3 , and those cameras you just saw like the R7. So, let's push in nice and tight here, and you can see the sensor on the R7 here: less than half the size of the full-frame sensor. And that's going to be a really important detail to understand because all of Canon's first R cameras had this bigger full-frame sensor, and that means all the lenses were designed for this bigger full-frame sensor.

Tony : With the R10 and the R7 , you only have the choice of those two kit lenses that Chelsea showed you. Now, you can attach the full-frame lenses to the R7 and the R10 , but they will be cropped in because you'll only be getting the center of the image. That means you'll be wasting more than half of the lens and spending more money than you would necessarily need to. So, until Canon releases more APS-C lenses for these smaller sensor cameras, one of the big benefits of the more expensive cameras is you'll have more complete access to the full-frame lenses and you'll have wide-angle lens capabilities.

Tony (voiceover): No, you can't currently buy any wide-angle RF lenses for the R10 or R7 , but there is an answer: you could get this EF to RF adapter from Milford Photo and then pick up a super wide EF-S lens, like this 10-18mm.

Tony : Now I'll show you the differences between the $2,500 R6 and the $3,900 R5. That is a big jump in price, but the R5 is a lot of camera. The R6 here does 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter, and that's actually a useful 20 frames per second including things like sports and wildlife. But it only has a 20MP sensor. Now, that's less than the R7 and R10 , but that doesn't mean the pictures are going to be worse. Because the sensor is bigger and you can use those full-frame lenses, you'll probably on average get better images.

Tony (voiceover): Just to prove that megapixels aren't everything, here's the 32MP Canon R7 on the left and the 20MP Canon R6 on the right. Zooming way in, we see about the same amount of detail, and if we look in the shadows, we can see the full-frame R6 is much cleaner. And peering into the background, we can see the nice bokeh and background separation that the full-frame sensor and professional lens give you.

Tony : The autofocus tracking on this is absolutely amazing; and if you want to shoot video like we are, it has a flip screen like all these Canon cameras do. But the video quality on this R6 is absolutely fantastic. Like the R7, it has sensor stabilization, as does the R5. So why would you spend the extra $1,400 to upgrade to the R5? Well, this is Canon's highest megapixel R camera with 45MP. So if you love shooting landscapes and you might want to make big prints on your wall, this is absolutely amazing.

Tony (voiceover): Same photo taken with the R6 and R5. You can see the R5 has so much more detail when you zoom in. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

Tony : But if you are going to spend more to upgrade to the higher megapixel camera, you need to make sure that you also buy good quality glass for it, like this Canon 24-70mm. Most photographers will spend more money on the lenses than the body, so I don't want to see you spending this much on an R5 and then putting the entry-level glass on it. If you do that, instead I would recommend you get the lower megapixel R6; otherwise, you'll just be generating big files without any more detail.

Tony : Now, if you are shooting video, the R5 has a couple of advantages: it can shoot 8K at 30 frames per second, and it's a RAW file. That means you can recover the highlights and the shadows, and you get just incredible dynamic range. That is incredible amounts of detail—way more than any of us really need—but if that does sound appealing to you, the R5 is absolutely powerful. Just be sure you buy really, really big memory cards.

Tony : And memory cards are another difference here too: the R5 has two memory cards, as did the R6 and R7, but this one has a CFexpress Type B card. That is this bigger card that can offload your pictures faster. That means for sports and wildlife where there's long action sequences, you'll be able to take more pictures before it starts buffering.

Tony : I also feel like the R5 feels like a more luxurious camera than the other cameras. It has a bigger, sharper viewfinder here, a better rear screen, it has this very nice top screen, and overall it's just an amazing camera to use. I think the R5 is the best overall camera capable of doing anything: sports, wildlife, and landscapes. But I do want to show you one more sports camera before we leave this field.

Tony : This is the Canon R3. It has a beautiful top screen, big rear screen, a vertical grip so you can hold it vertically, a massive battery so you can shoot all day; and for the really serious pros, it has features like a physical Ethernet port so you can offload your photos to your editor. And it is $6,000, but you do get what you pay for. If that's way out of your budget, just hold on: we're going to talk about much lower budget options in just one second because the good folks at Milford Photo have you covered. But if you're curious, listen to what this sounds like... Each one of those is a beautiful 24MP picture taken at 30 frames per second. And for things like golf, it can shoot silently and you don't have that problem of rolling shutter.

Tony: And for subjects that don't require autofocus or auto exposure, the R3 can shoot at up to 195 frames per second for about 50 shots, or about a quarter of a second. Notice how minimal the rolling shutter is. Amazing!

Tony : Now, this is the ultimate sports camera in the Canon lineup , but it's not as high megapixel as that R5; and that means that it's not as good at being a general-purpose camera.

Tony (voiceover): But the R5 has 45MP—that's almost twice as many as the R3's 24MP. Portrait photographers could use that detail to make bigger, higher-end, more expensive prints.

Tony : Also, if you ever want to travel with your camera, it's kind of big; it's also the opposite of discrete and it might make some people a little bit nervous. And for me, that's why I prefer the R5 for most things except for dedicated sports shooting.

Tony : This R3 also has a really cool trick up its sleeve: it knows where you're looking. So you can turn on eye-tracking autofocus, and when you hold the camera up to your eye like this, wherever you look, it follows your eye and locks onto focus. But I'll say, I don't really recommend people spend a lot for that—it's kind of gimmicky. I tried living with it for about a week and ultimately just ended up turning it off because it needs to be reset just about every time you use it. Now I do want to talk about those lower budget options, so let's take a walk through the woods here.

Chelsea : These are the Canon R and RP cameras , and they're about the same price as the new R7 and R10 . The RP is $1,000 and the R is $1,800. Um, the difference between the two cameras is not that much, but they are significantly different than the R7 and R10 . Let me break it down for you. So these are full-frame cameras; that means that you're going to get better image resolution. The less expensive RP has like 26MP and the R has 30MP. It's not a huge difference.

Tony (voiceover): I'll show you the exact difference. You can see even at 1,300% with a professional lens, there's no difference in sharpness. But maybe dynamic range: in really heavily recovered shadows, we can see the R is quite a bit cleaner than the RP. If you don't plan on shooting RAW and recovering shadows at least three stops, the RP should be just fine.

Chelsea : The frame rate—there's also not a big difference. The RP has five frames per second and the R has eight frames per second, so there's not a big difference in the frame rate between these two. But with the R7 and the R10 , they're no match for sports. You would not want to shoot these for sports. You would want these if you want the higher resolution and the full-frame sensors for shooting high-resolution landscapes, travel, things like that.

Chelsea : The difference between the two other than price is that the RP is lacking a few bells and whistles: the screen isn't as high-res, the EVF isn't as high-res. But the R has a few nicer features: it's got the screen on the top, so this is like the luxury version of this camera. Everything's just a bit nicer. Even though the RP is their entry-level camera, it's still a great camera, and we have six of them that we use in our studio because the image resolution is great, the video is great, the dynamic range is good, and they're a good value. My favorite walking-around lens is very versatile: it's the 24-240mm.

Tony : That was a lot of information. Let's recap real quick. If you're not a sports shooter, family pictures, travel, landscapes—I'm gonna steer you towards the Canon RP at about $1,000 or the Canon R at about $1,700. The images are going to look pretty much the same, but the Canon R feels a little bit better. And if you have more budget, then the $3,900 Canon R5 produces really high-quality images with its high-megapixel sensor. But please make sure you set aside money to get good lenses for it, like this 24-70mm f/2.8. I don't want to see you with a super expensive body and inexpensive lenses because then you're just wasting your time.

Chelsea : If you are shooting sports, we're going to recommend the R10, R7, R6, and the R3 in that order, depending on your budget. The R10 is $1,000, the R7 is $1,500, the R6 is $2,800, and the R3 is $6,000. Be sure to leave room in your budget for a good lens.

Tony : And if you're shooting some sports where you're not a dedicated sports shooter, I think the best all-around camera for an unlimited budget is the Canon R5. It has amazing ability for wildlife and sports and landscapes and portraits. It just—it also requires a really high budget.

Chelsea : If you're looking to shoot wildlife specifically, we're going to recommend the R10, the R7, and the R5 ; and again, that goes by your budget. If you can afford the R5, definitely go for that. If you're wondering why we didn't choose the R3 for wildlife, it's because it has 24MP, so you're not getting the same resolution, and it also has an AA filter, which means that it's not as sharp.

MILFORD — What started as a summer job for Jim Wilson turned into a love of photography and a successful career as a small business owner.

It was 26 years ago that Wilson opened Milford Photo - a shop that has become a Milford institution for area shutterbugs and camera equipment buffs.

“It was meant to be just a summer job, but it ended becoming my career,” Wilson said, adding that he was in high school when he took a summer job at a local camera store in downtown Milford.

“I was there for a number of years and then I opened up my own store 26 years ago,” Wilson added. “I liked the small businesses aspect, even though we are a little bit bigger business now, but I also wanted to be my own boss.”

Milford Photo celebrated its 26th anniversary on Aug. 23, and Wilson credits his staff for making the businesses as successful as it has been.

“The people that I work with ... they get it,” Wilson said. “They really care about their jobs, they want to help people, they are so patient, and all of my people are into photography, they can talk photography. So if someone comes here for help, we are going to get that customer again.

“We’re very hands-on, we always make sure we have sufficient staff to take care of the people when they come into the store,” Wilson added. “The people that work here blow me away with their knowledge and everything they do, and that’s the whole deal. If you want a successful business, you have to have good people, you have to take care of them and get people who are passionate about what they do, and that’s certainly, what we have here.”

One aspect that Wilson enjoys about Milford Photo is the smile people get when they see their photos.

“The photography industry touches so many people,” he said. “When you see people, and they look at their pictures, and the smile breaks out, it’s a rewarding business. Like I’ve always said, our main business is just memories, that’s what we are here for.”

Another reason why Wilson said Milford Photo has seen success for more than two decades is they were early adopters of transitioning from analog to digital photography.

“It was painful,” said Wilson, referring to the transition. “What happened was that everything was involved with film, and we do a lot of services like develop film, digital restoration, that sort of stuff. But back then, primarily, it was selling equipment and developing pictures.”

Wilson said people would bring in their film roll to get it developed in an hour, which was a high-volume business for them. He said digital came around, and people weren’t printing as much as they did with film.

“We had to buy all new (digital) equipment to do all this stuff, and I was kinda one of the first ones to get into it,” said Wilson. “It really was like starting over again, as far as the business was concerned, because I had to buy very expensive equipment to satisfy the customers. But I did it, and it turned out to be the smart thing to embrace it at the begging.”

However, Wilson said they’ve seen a resurgence in film.

“Film is back big-time now,” he said. “The young people are getting into the creative aspect of it, so now we do a lot of developing now. It’s crazy. If you would have said if film was going to make a comeback, I would have said it wouldn’t have happened.”

Wilson added that despite film making a comeback, when they develop film, customers ask them just to email them the photos. He said it’s a combination of old-school technology with current technology.

Another significant impact Milford Photo had to overcome was the COVID-19 pandemic that affected many small and large businesses across the country.

“The store was physically closed for two months, but we still needed a way to bring in revenue, so we concentrated on our online sales, which were always a small portion of what we did,” Wilson said. “We have a big inventory of product and we put a lot of effort into selling them online, and that really sustained us through the closure that we had gone through.”

Wilson said when they reopened, people were still unsure about going into a store in person, so they found that their online business kept on growing.

“We started to get repeat customers that were buying stuff, we sell in every state, and we sell stuff across the country,” he said. “So that’s become a much bigger piece of the revenue pie that was ever there.”

Their online sales didn’t just flourish with out-of-state sales but also within Connecticut and locally as well.

“It’s a convenience thing. It’s free shipping, and they order from us, and typically they have it the next day,” he said. “I think that’s what the whole closure to the country did, people really got used to purchasing online, people that never did before. Our prices are the same as Amazon or any other place, so we didn’t have a disadvantage there.”

By the second half of last year, Wilson said business was unbelievable for Milford Photo.

“In a lot of ways, we sell expensive products, but I think what happened to the consumer is that they weren’t waiting to get what they wanted,” he said. “For being closed for two months, we almost made the previous year's sales numbers, and this year, this is crazy, but it’s on track of becoming our best year in business.”

As things start going back to normal, Wilson said foot traffic has gone back, and the in-person services they provide have started up again.

“It’s been a fun ride. It’s been a little bit of a roller coaster with two recessions and digital happening, but we always try to go forward and grow,” Wilson said. “I think if you try to take the foot off the gas pedal when you're in business is not a good thing. You got to continually do it, we’ve really done that, and really I hope things continue the way it is because it’s been a great 26 years.”

Are Brick and Mortar Stores Still Relevant?

I was 14. After a year of mowing lawns and shoveling driveways I had finally saved up enough money to buy my first real camera (a Canon S30). At the the time, online stores like Amazon barely existed. Still growing in their late-90s infancy, the global online marketplaces we have become so accustomed to (like eBay) were barely a blip on the retail radar. Instead, I got in the car, and my mom drove me to an amazing place that felt like the center of the photography universe. Housed in an old bank (vault and all) was this incredible, gear-packed mecca called Milford Photo. My visit that day changed my life forever.

A Quick History

Fast forward to this past Monday, I had the real joy of stepping back into Milford Photo to sit down for a one-on-one with Jesse Thompson, the co-owner of Milford Photo and a 35 year veteran of all things camera retail.

"I worked at Milford Camera for 17 years, and I’ve been with Milford Photo for another 22 after that. I always figured this was a good business to be in. I’m selling to people’s wants, not necessarily their needs… what’s better than that?"

Milford Photo is located in the heart of downtown Milford, Connecticut, a small, affluent coastal town just a few blocks from the ocean. For any photographer, walking into a store like this is quite the experience. Walls of camera bodies and lenses from all the major manufactures flank you as you make your way to the center of the room. There’s studio lighting and equipment, accessories, straps, bags, and even a section dedicated to drones. It is so much more exciting to be able to physically hold, feel (and even test out) the equipment you want to buy, rather than just reading about it online.

Downstairs is a dedicated classroom, a room for designing photo gifts (mugs, calendars, etc), and a custom framing shop. If you need it, they probably have it. If you need it done, they can probably help you do it.

Brick and Mortar

On the surface, it might seem odd. An actual camera store? This is 2017, how can this be? I had the same question myself. We live in such a global economy, and every day it seems more and more major retail chains are shutting their doors. If a business like Sears can’t survive, how could a small local camera store?

"We’re consistent. We communicate well and we have the right product. That’s not easy to do, and we are constantly assessing our inventory. We also make things accessible to people. If you’re thinking about a new lens, come snap it on your camera and try it out. That’s where our advantage is."

Jesse and his experienced staff take an interesting approach to retail.

"We call it the Montessori approach to selling cameras. Someone comes in and wants a lesson on how to take better photos of their kids. It starts with their phone, but soon they want more. We grow with them as they grow as photographers. It’s exciting to watch, and it keeps us relevant."

That might have been the most surprising aspect of my visit. With nearly 4,000 people in their Meetup group, Milford Photo does hundreds of personal photography lessons every year. That’s in addition to their huge calendar of group classes, and visits from brand reps showcasing new gear. Education is truly the way they connect and maintain relationships with their customers.

The Resurgence of Physical Media

I asked Jesse about the impact of the new obsession with old media. In the music world, it’s all about vinyl right now. In photography, film has made a bit of a comeback. Take a quick walk through any college campus near you, and you’ll see plenty of Fuji instant cameras, throwback Kodaks, and even a few Holgas.

"It’s popular with younger people. It’s cool right now… old school. I don’t know what it means for the hobby as a whole, but for us, if we can sell it, we want to stock it. It’s also got people thinking about prints again, and that’s very exciting. Not just to us, but to all photographers."

He’s right. I would love to see a day where printing photos became the norm again. There may be some evidence of that at Milford Photo. Recently, the store hosted a rep from Hahnemühle Paper where 35 people came to hear the presentation. It was a diverse cross-section of people who all came from all over to find out more about home-printing on fine art paper.

"That’s encouraging. That’s what I like to see."

If you live in New England, and you have ever made the drive on I-95 between Boston and New York, you have no doubt seen the Milford Photo billboards. They are a mainstay in this area, and have been for decades. I asked about the other kinds of advertising Milford Photo invests in.

"The billboards work. They give us cache, and people remember us from them. Word of mouth is obviously huge for us. Print is too expensive, so we’ve really turned towards a strong social media presence instead. Our bread and butter comes from our classes. We can build relationships with people that last forever. There’s a lot of brand loyalty that comes from the teaching aspect of our business."

The Future of Brick and Mortar Stores

I wanted to get a sense of what the future might hold for a store like Milford Photo. The camera industry has changed a lot in the last 10 years. Mirrorless has become a big force in the industry, and it’s pushing the big companies like Canon and Nikon to innovate again. There’s the retro-throwback trend that’s happening, but who knows how long that will last. How does a traditional camera shop stay relevant?

"We too have to innovate. What if people stop wanting to take classes in person? Should we be looking into a more web-based classroom model?"

What if a company like Fuji or Sony overtakes the big two? How will that affect their customer base?

"We don’t have these answers, but we’re always asking the questions. Our rental business is big, and our used buy/sell/trade has started to grow again. We’re always trying to anticipate what’s next, and stay current with the trends. People come here because they love photography, and we want their experience to be memorable every time."

Jesse left me with a final thought that stuck with me. Something I think we could all apply to our own businesses one way or another.

" Our job is to find a way to say yes to someone, no matter what. You can never really say no."
